Seoul Flyers

Seoul Flyers is a premier running club with a wide range of people from all over the world, including Koreans and expatriates.

Part of the thriving Korean running community, Seoul Flyers compete in races all year round, in Seoul and throughout Korea. We have club runs on Saturday mornings by the Han River, as well Track Workouts on Tuesday nights and two Namsan Park runs on Thursday evenings.

Our roots are in road running, but our members take part in all sorts of sporting activities, including swimming and cycling and a selection of other training activities.

If you are feeling a bit daunted by the prospect of joining a running club don’t be. We have a diverse and sociable membership, with a wide range of age, ability, experience and commitment. Whatever your standard of fitness, you’ll be more than welcome and you are bound to find someone in the Club who is the same standard. With the common interest of running to stay healthy and growing in numbers, Seoul Flyers retain a friendly, small club atmosphere and always welcomes newcomers.

SEOUL INTERNATIONAL MARATHON PACKETS

This Sunday is Donga Seoul International Marathon-- if you are registered please contact Sun to arrange to pick up your packet BEFORE race day (suntbae@hotmail.com 010-4589-0825). There will be no packet pick-up on race morning.

After months of training, Donga Marathon is a mere week away. This is the week where you want to be doing more resting than running. It is also the week where you want to be careful of what you eat. For me, it's avoiding spicy food that is most important. Just remember to be conscious of what you're consuming, so that you'll be race ready! See you at the start line!

The new Seoul Flyers website is up and running! Check it out at www.seoulflyers.com A HUGE thank you to Jared Mitchell for creating the new site! We're so professional looking now.

Race Bibs & Package Pickup

Dear Runners,

In order to ensure your race bib / package that you ordered gets delivered to you on race day, we are setting a cutoff time of 30 minutes prior to the race starting for collection of the race bib. After this time the race bib will no longer be available for collection and will be put into storage so that the race coordinator can prepare for their race.

In addition, the registered runner must pickup their bib. If for some reason a runner cannot attend the race, if they give their bib to another runner, they need to ensure that the Race Coordinator is informed of who will be picking up the bib on race day. Going forward, the registered runner will be responsible for any arrangement that has another runner utilising their bib, the Seoul Flyers Race Coordinator or Seoul Flyers Committee members will not get involved in any such arrangement. The Race Coordinator will remove the timing chip from the package before it is handed over to person who is authorised to pickup the race package.

This new race package / bib pickup process is to ensure integrity of registration / race organiser results / race organiser insurance obligations.

I appreciate your understanding of this new process and look forward to great running year with all of you.

Pierre Matthee
Seoul Flyers Running Club
Senior Vice President

Supporting Your Fellow Members

Dear Seoul Flyers,

We are fast approaching the Spring racing season and we will all hopefully be participating in many races this year. As a club, we all provide, one way or another, support for each other, either during races or during our weekly training sessions or via advice on Facebook and email.

I encourage all of you to where possible, take some time after you finish your race, to congregate with the other Seoul Flyers and provide support for your fellow members as they finish there race. This is another opportunity to socialize and both provide and benefit from the mutual support the club promotes.

I look forward to catching up with you at the forthcoming races this year.

Pierre Matthee
Senior Vice President
Seoul Flyers Running Club.

Emerging From a Long and Cold Winter

We are emerging from a long and cold winter. It has challenged even the hardiest amongst us to get
out on the road and get those miles under our belts. Snow and ice has made it a tricky and sometimes
slippery event. Despite all that, we have had groups of 20+ runners on most Saturday mornings running
the 10KM loop and an even hardier few getting out early and running 30+ KMs preparing for the
marathon season this Spring.

The track has been covered in ice, so no track workouts have taken place for a couple of months and
the Namsan hill run has had varying attendance due to ice and snow and -15 degrees C. temperatures at
night.

It is warming up now and we can expect the weekly track, hills and river runs to gain momentum as we
all prepare for the Spring racing season. From March onwards, there will be races every weekend, so
keep a close watch on our Facebook Event page to see which races we will be participating in and get
your race registration in early.

The big race in March is the Seoul International Marathon (Donga Marathon) on March 20th, it is the
only Spring race in Korea that is an official qualifying race for the Boston Marathon. We will have a big
turnout of Seoul Flyer members for this race, this full marathon attracts a large cross section of our
members from three hours marathoners to those who will finish after 5+ hours.

Other races to watch out for are the 7th Koguryo Marathon on February 20th, this is a good long run
training event (32Km) for the Donga Marathon. The 2011 Masters Challenge Race on 27th February,
another long run training opportunity with a 32km distance.

On March 26th, the 10th Jeju International Ultra Marathon, on Jeju Island, for those of you who like
200KM, 100KM or 50 mile races….very beautiful and hilly.

On March 27th, the 11th Incheon International Marathon..through the streets of Incheon.

If you want a trip down south to historic Gyeongju, then the Cherry Marathon is the race for you, this
will be on 9th April and you should catch the first flush of the cherry blossom bloom.

On April 10 is the 2011 Adidas MBC Marathon, big race on eastern fringe of Seoul along the Han River.

The choices to run this Spring racing season are endless so come and join Seoul Flyers. This is an
opportunity to meet lots of great people, travel in and around Seoul and further afield in Korea. There is
no greater experience than participating in a race in Seoul, the camaraderie of the thousands of runners
taking part, makes for a great experience.

Take part in the running culture in Seoul with Seoul Flyers Running Club. We welcome everyone, we are
a club that caters for all levels of runners.
